Diagnostics & Surgery

Pet Diagnostics & Surgery Services in Excelsior, Minnesota

Diagnostics, Laboratory Testing & Lab Work

Our hospital is equipped to provide general laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging, and preventative care labwork. We are able to perform tests both during your pet’s wellness visit, as well as when we suspect your pet may have a health issue. We also have access to extensive specialized testing through our outside laboratories. Your pet’s veterinarian can help guide you in deciding when in house vs. send out labwork is recommended.

Our diagnostic capabilities include:

  • Blood, urine, and fecal analysis
  • Heartworm and tick testing
  • Ear and skin cytology
  • Pathology (biopsy, histopathology, cytology)
  • Radiology (x-rays)
  • Dental Radiographs (X-Rays)
  • Fluid Therapy
  • Therapeutic Diets
  • Prescription Medications

If it is in the best interest of your pet, we may recommend referring complex medical conditions to area board-certified specialists. In these cases, our doctors will work on behalf of you and your pet to communicate all pertinent information and remain up to date on any changes and progress throughout the course of treatment.

Routine, Advanced & Emergency Surgeries

Whether performing a routine veterinary surgery or an emergency procedure, you can have confidence that the doctors and staff at Excelsior Animal Hospital will work hard to ensure each procedure is thorough, completed with care and skill, and is as stress-free as possible for you and your pet.

We understand that having a pet undergo anesthesia can be stressful for owners, and we are happy to answer any questions regarding your pet’s surgery. In fact, a pre-surgical consultation is an essential part of the process. Our doctors and staff will also provide postoperative care to ensure a rapid return to your companion’s happy, healthy self.

Our doctors routinely perform a number of surgical procedures including:

  • Spay
  • Neuter (castration)
  • Cryptorchid neuter (retained testicle)
  • Umbilical hernia repair
  • Wound repair
  • Tumor or growth removals
  • Ear hematoma repair
  • Toe amputation
  • Grid keratotomy
  • Cystotomy
  • Eye enucleation

We are also equipped for more extensive surgical procedures when necessary. If you have a question about a particular procedure, feel free to call and ask our care team.

What Can I expect If My Pet Needs Surgery?

Each procedure is monitored and recorded by a certified veterinary technician to ensure the safety of your pet. As a precaution, we strongly recommend a pre-anesthetic blood panel for all patients undergoing general anesthesia to help ensure they are healthy enough for anesthesia.

After morning procedures, patients are allowed to recover in a warm, padded kennel as the effects of anesthesia wear off. Patients are checked regularly for comfort and adequate pain control. The majority of our surgeries are outpatient procedures allowing your pet to be picked up in the late afternoon and finish recovering in the comfort of your home. We will schedule a discharge time so we have time to answer your questions and provide you with all the information you will need to care for your pet in the days following surgery.

Advanced orthopedic procedures are referred to Twin Cities Veterinary Surgery Group, who send board-certified surgeons to our hospital as needed.
